S.T.A.R. Ankle Replacement Surgery

Alan S. Tuckman, M.D. has been appointed as a clinical instructor for the Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement (S.T.A.R.). Dr. Tuckman, a fellowship-trained orthopaedic foot and ankle specialist, has been performing ankle replacements for 15 years.  He has been utilizing the S.T.A.R. total ankle system in his practice since the summer of 2009, when this device was approved by the FDA for use in the USA after a lengthy clinical study.

The purpose of a total ankle is to relieve pain in the ankle while still allowing the ankle move. Usually this type of pain is caused by arthritis, a condition that can take many forms and may go by many names, including osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

S.T.A.R. was developed in 1978 by Dr. Hakon Kofoed of Denmark and has been helping Europeans walk for approximately 20 years. It is the first three-part device and the only FDA-approved total ankle replacement system approved for uncemented use. This allows for better bone in-growth, stabilization and bone preservation. In clinical trials, S.T.A.R. Ankle patients had superior effectiveness and comparable safety results compared to ankle fusion. S.T.A.R. Ankle represents the next generation of ankle replacement prosthesis that will allow patients to benefit from quicker recovery times and better long-term success rates than previous ankle replacement procedures. S.T.A.R. Ankle has more than 20 years of clinical experience and the current design has been implanted in over 16,000 patients worldwide.

The S.T.A.R. Ankle is offered by Small Bone Innovations, Inc. (SBi), one of the first companies to focus purely on small bone and joint science.
